Career overview

Dean is a forensic specialist with more than 30 years of investigative and consulting experience.   He gained significant investigations experience as a member of Victoria Police including service with the CIB Fraud Squad where he was involved in a large number of fraud-related investigations and prosecutions.

His forensic consulting experience includes investigations into major corporate collapses, workplace fraud and misconduct in business, quantification of loss in commercial disputes, complex funds tracing and fraud and misconduct control.   A particular focus in recent years has been the provision of assistance to the police in various states in the investigation and prosecution of workplace fraud.

Academic involvement

Dean presented the Forensic Investigation element of the Certified Fraud Investigators’ Course delivered by La Trobe University in conjunction with Victoria Police for nine years until 2004.    He has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Melbourne in Forensic Business Processes at both graduate and undergraduate levels since 2005.   He was visiting scholar at the Queensland University of Technology and was an Executive-in-Residence at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Business and Economics.  He is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Melbourne.

Dean developed the Financial Investigation and Forensic Accounting one-day course for CPA Australia in 2007 and has delivered this program several times each year since.    He also developed an on-line version of this course.  He is active in developing content in the CPA Program for CPA Australia, is regularly engaged to develop examination questions for the CPA Program. He sits on the editorial committee for the Contemporary Business Issues module of the CPA program.

Standards development

In 2002, Dean was appointed to a Standards Australia committee formed to advise on corporate governance standards.   Through his membership of this committee, he was appointed convenor of the working party formed by Standards Australia to produce Australia’s Fraud and Corruption Control Standard (AS 8001) and was appointed convenor of the working party tasked with developing a Whistleblower Protection Standard (AS 8004).

In 2017 he was appointed to the Standards Australia Organisational Governance Committee and to an equivalent committee for International Organization for Standardization (ISO).  He is active on both committees and takes a particular interest in developing standards dealing with whistleblower protection.  In 2018, Dean was appointed by Standards Australia to represent it on a working group tasked with developing an international whistleblower protection standard (to be designated ISO 37002).    He recently attended a meeting of the working group in Paris where he led one of the task groups developing various sections of the second draft.

Whistleblower consulting experience

Dean was a senior member of staff at KPMG for 17 years specialising in Forensic Accounting.    While at KPMG he consulted in investigation, whistleblower protection and misconduct reporting systems.   He established KPMG’s misconduct reporting service in 2003 and was the leader of that service until he left KPMG in November 2005.

In 2006, Dean took up a position as one of two Forensic Partners at McGrathNicol.    He established RightCall as McGrathNicol’s external reporting service and was the leader of that practice from establishment in April 2006.    He will be leader of McGrathNicol’s misconduct reporting practice until its discontinuation on 30 June 2019.

Dean gave evidence to a Joint Parliamentary Committee on whistleblower protection in 2008 and prepared detailed submissions on the new whistleblower protection legislation – to become law as Treasury Laws Amendment (Enhancing Whistleblower Protections) Act 2019 on 1 July 2019 – on behalf of both McGrathNicol and the Australian Institute of Professional Investigators in November 2017.

Career overview

Jodie’s business consulting career includes IT and Financial consulting for PwC and Deloitte where she gained a total of 12 years’ experience in a range of leadership and IT Project Management roles.   Jodie also has administration, financial and sales experience providing her with strong organisational and communication skills.

RightCall role

Jodie was appointed Business Manager to RightCall in July 2019.   She is the principal RightCall call centre operator and manages up to three other call centre operators as dictated by RightCall operational requirements.  She also monitors RightCall’s online misconduct reporting platform, WhistleB.    Jodie manages RightCall client relationships and prepares half-yearly reports of reporting activity.
